Xin selected StopTech’s 328x25mm (1-piece rotor) ST-41 Big Brake Kit for his VW GTI, a great way to improve on the stock brake components without breaking the bank. The kits are available for front axle applications and include StopTech 1-piece Sport Rotors, StopTech ST-41 powder-coated four-piston calipers with the patented stiffening bridge, StopTech Street Performance brake pads for extended high performance street driving as well as occasional track use, StopTech braided stainless steel brake lines, plus all necessary brackets and hardware to complete the job.
The stiff 2-piece, fully-forged calipers have designated piston sizes specific to this application and provide a firmer, more responsive brake pedal that provides better brake pedal modulation. The larger 328x25mm directionally-vaned 1-piece StopTech Sport Rotors, available in slotted or drilled finishes, provide greater heat capacity and reduced brake fade. By now, the Rauh Welt Begriff (RWB) name has spread world-wide and we’d trust most of our followers have at least seen if not heard of an RWB Porsche 911. Akira Nakai of Chiba – suburb of Tokyo, Japan, is the “legend” behind the RWB name and world-wide traveler who creates, shapes, and molds these projects for Porsche owners daring enough to cut up a perfectly good 930, 964, or 993 Porsche 911 and take it to extreme levels. We’ll spare you the history lesson as you can find a lot about the RWB builds online and immerse yourself in hours of entertainment and information if you haven’t already. This is what we’re really excited about…
Achtuning has been given the honor and opportunity to play part in the first RWB Seattle build by supplying it’s owner with performance enhancements he’ll need to toss his RWB Porsche, named “Meguri Ai” by Nakai-san himself, around our local tracks! The StopTech ST60 “Trophy” Big Brake Kit has arrived for the ACHTUNING Volkswagen Golf R! (Which means we’re going to have a KILLER deal available for anyone interested in a slightly used ST40 Trophy kit for Golf R!! Email email@example.com for more info.) Upgrading from the current 4-piston to 6-piston caliper gets us more thermal capacity and more pad surface for an over-all improvement in braking performance. The gorgeous StopTech “Trophy” MIL-spec hard-anodized calipers are impervious to color change or fading at extreme race temperatures.
Despite the increase in size, the over-all weight difference is minimal – under 2 lb when including the larger ST60 caliper bracket! We look forward to seeing how much of a difference the kit will make for us on the track.

As the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Our favorite project car to date continues to be a blast to drive and has been a fantastic marketing tool for the business. It’s a head-tuner on the street and a 911-killer on the track! However, with exciting new cars being added to the Audi and Volkswagen line-up it’s time for Achtuning to move on and sell the A3.
The Achtuning A3 project started with an APR “S3 Conversion” with K04 turbo, front mount inter-cooler, high pressure fuel pump, Carbonio cold air intake, and APR “stealth” turbo-back exhaust. We threw on H&R’s “Premium” coil-over suspension kit and had 225/35 Falken FK452s wrapped around 19″ Hartmann Forged Split-7 Wheels. StopTech’s 355mm ST40 big brake kit is exposed through the polished spokes. A Stern Subframe ReBar helps keep things nice and sturdy out back, allowing the front-wheel-drive torque monster to keep all 4 wheels properly balanced on the road around the twisties. Factory Audi styling bits like a front lip, side skirts, rear valence, and roof spoiler gave the A3 a more aggressive look.
The A3 was stripped of it’s engine in late 2009 to make room for APR’s “Stage 4″ set-up but the arrival of the Achtuning Golf R meant it would make more sense to put the sub-500 hp engine into something that can put all that power to the ground using all 4 wheels. Therefore the “Stage 4″ now resides in the Achtuning Golf R which left us with a perfectly good, low-mileage BPY 2.0T engine out of the Golf R to throw into the A3. There are benefits of running the BPY engine over the A3′s original CDL 2.0T engine and they are:
- Lower compression (9.8:1) forged pistons. BPY is 10.5:1.
- strengthened connecting rods
- enlarged wrist pins
- stronger piston rings
- upgraded bearings
- reinforced engine block
- upgraded camshafts (longer duration)
- upgraded injectors (+13% flow)
The A3 is still running APR’s inter-cooler, Carbonio intake, and high pressure fuel pump along with the full APR 3″ turbo-back exhaust. A Quaife limited-slip differential also made its way into the transmission. The software on the ECU is still the APR “Edition30/K04″ turbo file. APR quotes 309hp and 314tq with ECU, intake, and high pressure fuel pump while the turbo-back exhaust typically adds another 25hp – some healthy numbers for 4-doors and a hatch! Only 8500 miles on the Golf R engine while there is just under 84K miles on the chassis. (We picked it up with 73K) Our asking price is $22K. Troy brought us his 2001 Audi TT that he and his family have daily driven since the car rolled off the dealer lot 12-years ago. Regular service intervals and all-around proper care kept this 150K mile roadster in great shape and has served the family well. Not yet willing to part with the car after picking up a new Audi TTRS, Troy decided to bring their beloved TT to Achtuning for a new lease on life. It was decided the TT would serve as the family’s weekend fun-mobile and eventually a dedicated track car so engine, suspension, and brakes would need attention. For phase 1 of the project we inspected the car completely and found a few items needed to be addressed before adding more go-fast bits. Once that was all done, we moved on to phase 2 with suspension and brakes. First, H&R’s Street Performance Coil-Overs would replace the TT’s original and now very worn suspension and allow the TT to corner with ease and keep the car stable. StopTech’s ST40 355mm big brake kit would serve to better stop the TT before we add more power while the popular motorsport inspired Hartmann Euromesh 4-GS wheels were mounted to clear the new, much larger brake calipers.
Phase 3 will begin in a week or so with a Techtonics Tuning down-pipe mated to a Hartmann cat-back exhaust which will complement the APR K04 turbo that will make it’s way under the hood.
