APR is pleased to present a new ECU Calibration Strategy for all 3.0 T ECU Upgrades!!

Written by Dion on February 3, 2012 – 4:00 pm -

APR’s Engineering Teams have finished final testing of a new ECU Calibration for the Stage I and Stage II+ ECU Upgrades. The results are an additional 20-30 Horsepower and ft-lbs of torque depending on operating conditions, and the addition of APR Motorsport features designed to enhance your driving experience.

Accompanying these updates, all ECU’s flashed with APR’s v2.0 software will be subject to subsequent updates via OBD-II port reflashes through APR’s world wide distribution network, ie us!

For several years, APR’s tested the 3.0 TFSI through brutal professional motorsport racing in the Grand-AM and World Challenge Road Racing Series. Automotive Engineering firms have continuously turned to endurance racing as proving grounds for new technologies and to measure the durability and viability of these new technologies in a rigorous total system accelerated life-testing environment found in very few alternatives. Through this testing and research APR’s Engineering Team is able to deliver a more powerful application of the Stage I and Stage II+ ECU Upgrade and do so knowing little to no loss of life will be suffered in the comparison to the Original Calibration and engine performance levels.

APR’s dynamic calibration changes allow the TVS1320 supercharger unit to operate to its full potential under many different ambient conditions. The resulting increase in intake mass airflow delivers more power though the entire rev range, no matter what APR Stage or APR Performance program you choose. Accordingly, adjustments were made to other areas of the ECU calibration to ensure proper operation as intended by the OEM.

APR’s Motorsport Left Foot Braking feature is now available allowing customers more control over their vehicle’s throttle. Under normal operation, throttle input is disabled while pressing the accelerator and brake at the same time, however this may be undesirable for those looking to get the most out of their vehicles performance on the track. Enabling the left foot braking feature, the driver will have complete control over the vehicle’s throttle and braking system, which may give the edge he or she needs at the track.

APR’s Motorsport Rev Limiter is also now available allowing 6MT customers to reach max RPM without the ECU slowing down acceleration nearly 400 RPM’s earlier. The result is more power to redline and a definable redline feeling as seen on Audi Quattro GMBH vehicles such as the B7 RS4 and R8 V8 & V10.

Version 2.0 software is now available and is a FREE upgrade for all existing APR Stage I and Stage II+ customers.

Application Guide

  • B8 S4 3.0 TFSI – 6MT & DSG
  • B8 S5 3.0 TFSI – 6MT & DSG
  • C6 A6 3.0 TFSI – Tiptronic

APR Presents: 3.0 TFSI Supercharger Pulley Upgrade

Written by Dion on June 20, 2011 – 8:29 am -

APR is pleased to present the world’s first Supercharger Pulley and corresponding ECU Upgrade for the 3.0 TFSI. Without recalibrating the ECU found in Audi’s latest line of supercharged direct injected vehicles, pulley upgrades offer no advantage, as the supercharger will simply bypass boost pressure. With APR’s ability to expertly recalibrate the 3.0 TFSI Engine Control Unit, we are able to develop new hardware and calibrate the ECU to work properly as if intended by the factory.

Many enthusiasts coming from Audi’s history of turbocharged vehicles expected massive increases in torque, at lower RPMs, simply by adding an ECU Upgrade. Unlike turbochargers, roots style superchargers are positive displacement meaning they provide a fixed amount of air flow based on engine speed. On the 3.0TFSI Audi chose to use a bypass valve that bleeds off boost pressure when requested. Keeping the valve almost completely shut at lower RPMs allows them to make respectable torque, and, opening the valve at higher RPMs allows them to keep horsepower within their marketing goal. Consequently, the APR Stage I ECU upgrade provides a relatively low increase in torque but an exceptional increase in power. For those demanding more torque, the APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade is the answer. Spinning the supercharger faster increases air flow and effectively doubles the low-end gains of Stage I. The gain in torque is felt immediately, but the results are present from beginning to end adding up to 80ft-lbs and 108 horsepower at all four wheels!

APR has chosen not to cut any corners and as such each APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade Kit includes a new supercharger belt. Furthermore, all existing APR Stage I ECU Upgrade customers are entitled to a free APR Stage II+ ECU Upgrade required for proper functionality. Finally, every APR Pulley is E-Coated black for an OEM appearance.

Increased Supercharger Speed

The 3.0 TFSI uses an Eaton Twin Vortices Series (TVS) Roots-type Supercharger unit, which features a four-lobe rotor design to safely run at high operating speeds. APR’s no stranger to the Eaton TVS1320 Supercharger Unit having spent several years developing a Stage III supercharger System for the High Revving Audi RS4 and S5 4.2L FSI V8. Through the years, APR’s Engineering Teams placed even greater speed demands on the TVS1320 than offered to the public with a flawless track record.

A balance of power and reliability is always a concern when going beyond what Audi delivers from the factory and APR’s Engineering Teams use accelerated life testing both in house and through professional motorsport racing to ensure years of Performance Without Compromise.

Increased Boost Pressure

Unlike turbochargers, superchargers boost pressure is nearly fixed in relation to engine speed. The factory supercharger unit features an electronically controlled bypass valve which bleeds off boost pressure when mass airflow and load levels increase past the power requirements set from the factory. The APR ECU upgrade prevents boost from bleeding back into the intake system, resulting in higher boost levels. However, boost pressure is still limited by the size and the speed of the supercharger.

The APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade increases the RPM of the supercharger resulting in an increase of boost pressure all the way to redline. This results in torque you can feel off idle all the way to redline.

Installation Kit

The factory pulley is pressed on to the supercharger’s input shaft. It’s not possible to remove the factory pulley without damage, or damaging the supercharger itself unless special care and attention is taken.

The APR Supercharger Pulley Installation Kit is designed to encapsulate the entire pulley and pull
evenly across its entire surface. The unit is compact enough to not require complete removal of the front end of your vehicle, reducing labor time. Furthermore a provision was made to incorporate a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar which allows the entire assembly to be easily counter-held and ultimately makes the process a one man job.

A complete install manual covers the install process from start to finish, making installation easily completed in your own garage should you take on the task. Otherwise we are happy to offer installation services – just give us a call to schedule an appointment!

Software

APR Stage 2+ Software is REQUIRED to take advantage of this modification. Pulley upgrades do not work on stock or stage 1 software.

APR Stage 2+ Software Upgrade is included as a Free upgrade for existing APR Stage 1 Customers.
If you do not have APR Software already, you’ll need to purchase it when sending in your ECU for this upgrade.

APR Product Release: Carbonio Intake for Audi (B8) S4!

Written by Dion on May 17, 2011 – 8:04 am -

APR has finally released the Carbonio Cold Air Intake for the Audi (B8) S4! We’ve got them en route and are offering FREE SHIPPING in the Continental US!! The intake will be added to our online catalog shortly – meanwhile, feel free to contact us directly by phone or email to place your order!!

Carbonio’s latest carbon fiber intake for the 3.0 TFSI engine is a ram air design that completely separates the intake filter from the engine bay. Building from years of experience on and off the race track, Carbonio’s and APR’s engineering teams have spent countless hours developing a true cold air and ram air carbon fiber design that can be recreated affordably for the street performance enthusiast.

For many years professional motorsport organizations have suffered great expense to properly tune the air intake delivery system for turbocharged engines for use in endurance and sprint races where every last horsepower and pound feet of torque can make the difference in position when crossing the finish line. Historically these designs have proven to be the most efficient and powerful although the most expensive to produce.

Aftermarket performance companies have attempted to capitalize on these designs however the cost restraints have typically resulted in compromise and deviation from the true engineering principles associated with motorsport accomplishment. Don’t be fooled by catch phrases and tag lines alluding to a new intake technology or special design characteristic. You won’t see any of these gimmicks installed on race cars at the Nurburgring.

Carbonio and APR have gone even further to maintain all oem specifications necessary to integrate cohesively with an otherwise stock engine to avoid raising eyebrows at the dealership. Flexibility was another characteristic of Carbonio’s and APR’s design whereas the new TFSI intake is also suitable for Stage 1 and Stage 2 modified engines all the way up to future supercharger upgrades.

Constructed of aerospace grade carbon fiber and designed to remove intake restriction, APR’s Carbonio intake system provides smoother transitional airflow, increased air velocity, superior insulation of the incoming air to reduce intake air temperatures and a larger volume of available air to aid throttle response.

Benefits of the Carbonio CAI System include:

  • Increased Horsepower and Torque
  • Improved Throttle Response
  • Improved Fuel Economy
  • Enhanced Engine Volumetric Efficiency
  • Enhanced Sound of Supercharger
  • Installs in an Hour (does not require bumper or headlight removal)
  • Removes OEM intake snorkel which can collapse under boost
  • Maintains Clean Appearance by Retaining Factory Engine Covers

Audi now added to APR’s Motorsport line-up

Written by Dion on October 26, 2009 – 12:56 pm -

Details from this weekend’s APR BBQ are still pouring out of Alabama, but the most exciting news (so far) was about APR’s new Audi addition to their motorsport team… (source: http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Motorsport_News/article_5390.shtml)

Quote, originally posted by Fourtitude »
Opelika, AL – Building on a highly successful 2009 campaign, APR Motorsport is proud to announce the launch of an entire new platform for the KONI Sports Car Challenge GS Class. For the 2010 season, APR Motorsport will run a second squad of two Audi S4 sedans in the GS Class. Audi’s new S4 is being hailed as an amazingly competitive car in comparison to its typical showroom rivals. Independent tests against its competitors in class are overwhelmingly in favor of Audi’s newest generation. APR Motorsport is the first professional motorsport team to build its future around this new chassis full of technological advances. The new S4 is certain to prove competitive to the standard fare of Porsches, factory-prepared Mustangs, Challengers, Camaros, BMW M3’s and more in Grand Am Road Racing.

APR Motorsport is a professional racing effort created by APR, LLC, an engineering firm dedicated to enhancing the performance of vehicles from Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen. APR Motorsport has performed quite well since entering the KONI Sports Car Challenge ST class in 2008 with a team of Volkswagen GTIs. The team has produced a slew of wins and a long list of accomplishments in only their first two years of competition including winning the most races of any KONI Challenge team in 2009.

APR Motorsport simultaneously announced their intentions to upgrade and continue their Volkswagen GTI efforts with the newest generation Mk 6 chassis introduced as the 2010 model. APR Motorsport seems to have their hands full, but as those who attended the announcement at this Saturday’s Annual Customer Appreciation BBQ held at APR headquarters near Auburn, AL can attest, APR has plenty of talent, experience, equipment and engineering prowess to gallantly field both efforts. APR Motorsport Principle and APR, LLC President Stephen Hooks commented, “The accomplishments of the race engineers and the Software, Electrical and Mechanical engineering teams at APR have at times been simply amazing in their success and opportunity for continual break through from cooperation.”

Audi’s new S4 comprises a completely new power plant with their 3-liter supercharged, direct injected narrow angle V6 producing 331hp in production form. The new S4 also benefits from Audi’s latest version of quattro all-wheel drive and MLB architecture that moves the engine behind the front axle. APR Motorsport Director Jeff Mishtawy says, “The new S4 is exactly the platform our engineering teams have been very eager to get their hands on for a GS
effort. Weight distribution, power output, mechanical grip and driver setup opportunity is very favorable for the class once properly developed and we expect to be competitive almost immediately given a proper set of rules from Grand-Am”.

Representatives from Grand Am were on site at the announcement at APR’s Alabama facility which signifies support of the new entrants. APR Motorsport seems to be leading the effort to bring some newer trends in sports car racing development to Grand Am Road Racing through the use of new cars that are of typically smaller engine displacement and use forced induction. The 2010 season of the KONI Sports Car Challenge may see some other new force inducted, all wheel drive entrants as well.
