Cayenne Turbo gets a big bump in power thanks to APR chip tuning

18 11 2008

Car Nutz Customz in Bellevue, WA brought us this 2004 Porsche Cayenne Turbo after they had installed a Fabspeed exhaust system, including down-pipes - what a monstrous roar this thing has!

This thing is a MONSTER! 440 hp and 450 lb. ft. of torque in stock form, and the APR software we’re loading pushes power to an APR-claimed 493 hp and 544 lb. ft. of torque (on 93-octane). The neck-snapping power in stock form is incredible, especially considering how big and heavy this thing is. You honestly forget you’re in an SUV. Car Nutz is also responsible for the 23″ Rinspeed wheels this thing is sittin’ on and they electronically lowered the suspension to improve the stance with it’s new shoes. Rinspeed pedals concluded their interior “upgrade”.

The interior comes with the usual leather, brushed aluminum, and carbon trim found in many Porsches I’ve seen come through here. It’s nice to actually see this thing gets driven regularly! The all-suede headliner and pillars are always a nice touch (to me) considering all us VW guys are always trying to upgrade our’s with the soft, plush material.

Now for a drive now that it’s chipped!

STaSIS 4:1 Center Differential on a B6 S4

17 11 2008

After a few weeks in the shop, we installed the STaSIS 4:1 center differential on my B6 S4. The stock differential provides 2:1 torque distribution, with the modified STaSIS unit we’re able to provide 4:1 just like the B7 RS4.

I have not had a chance to take the car to an HPDE yet, but I have noticed an immediate difference coming out of the apex of a corner. Typically when you’re exiting, the car begins to under-steer; with the diff the moment you begin to under-steer the power is transferred from the front to the rear and we can neutralize some of this under-steer.

There has been no odd behavior from ESP or ABS. The only thing I’ve noticed post-diff has been some Quattro binding at low speed turning, such as in parking lots.

This modification is available for 5 and 6 speeds, manual A4/S4s.

The install was simple, expect approximately one hour for the install and reinstall. Start by disconnecting the center drive-shaft. The drive-shaft is held in by six allen key head bolts, be careful not to strip these. We heated the bolts with MAAP gas to loosen and burn off any Loctite.

Once the bolts are out, the Torsen housing can be removed, and the differential can be removed. Slide in your new unit, refill the transmission fluid (it’s shared with center diff) and you should be good to go!

APR full exhausts for Audi B6 A4

14 11 2008

Mark came in to see if we could do anything about his previous exhaust set-up - Apparently the down-pipe was bent after the car had bottomed-out. Ultimately it was determined that a replacement would be needed so Mark selected APR’s full system this time around.

It will be interesting to hear back from Mark about the differences (if any) between his previous exhaust (DeCorsa) and his new APR set-up.

VW Mk4 GTI gets StopTech BBK

13 11 2008

Chris sent us photos of his VW Mk4 GTI which recently received a StopTech Big Brake Kit. The brake upgrade Chris chose includes a 4-piston caliper, 328×28mm slotted rotors, stainless-steel lines, and Axxis Ultimate ceramic brake pads.

The BBS CH wheels barely wrap around the larger brake calipers but they look fantastic!

Chris is a member of the Armed Forces and every now and then indulges on performance parts for his VW, even while he’s stationed over-seas. We are grateful for his continued support!

We still have a few of these Big Brake Kits on the shelf, ready to ship! Click on the thumbnail image below to direct you to our online store!

Car Domain VW Mk5 GTI Project - APR Tuned!

12 11 2008

Weston from Car Domain came by to get his Rieger’d out Mk5 GTI tuned with APR software.

Stock, 91-octane, and 93-octane programs were loaded to the ECU. The 91-octane program for the Mk5 GTI produces an APR-claimed 246 crank hp and 282 lb./ft. of torque… 252 and 303 respectively on 93-octane which Weston can expect to try out in the event he cruises up north into Canada where 94-octane is more commonly found. Expect a feature on Car Domain blog about their Mk5 GTI project build-up!

DIS “Bulb Out” with LED license plate lights?

12 11 2008

NOTE: We do NOT carry the license plate LEDs or resistors.

Some of you may remember my post on LED license plate light replacements. Until recently, I haven’t had any issues with bulb out indicators on my B6 S4. I’d say the bulbs were fine for about six months, then I’d get random warnings from the DIS when I started the car. Sometimes they’d go away, other times they’d stay on. This became increasingly more bothersome so I did a little research.

As you all know, LEDs have less resistance than a typical filament based bulb. The DIS system monitors bulbs by checking their current resistance against a known parameter; when the values don’t coincide the system shows you an error.

To solve this little quirk we need to supply the system with an acceptable value. One option is to purchase new LEDs with built in resistors…at $40-50 for two, I said “Pass!”. Another option is to add a resistor inline to “simulate” the correct value.

I purchased 25 Ohm, 25 Watt load resistor to add inline to my license plate light wiring. To install this, I removed the trunk lid’s lining. It was secured by approximately eight clips and two screws (one inside the emergency escape handle, another in the opposite handle). Once I removed the lining I unplugged the license plate light harness.

The harness is made up of four wires: brown, gray, brown, brown/blue striped. I clipped the first set of brown and gray wires and sodered one end of the resistor inline to the brown side and the remaining end to the gray side. Afterwards, I added a little bit of electrical tape to protect the soder and wires from each other.

Finally, I needed to mount the resistor. Keep in mind, this resistor gets HOT, so don’t touch it! I choose to attach the resistor on the inside of one of the trunk panels with some high temp RTV silcone. I clamped the resistor down and let it dry. That’s it. DIS…gone!

As always, we cannot be responsible for any damage caused to your car by this information. Use at your own risk.

DIY Wheel Finishes… Why not?

11 11 2008

Mark stopped by to show off the new finish on his “winter” set-up… These are Hartmann New Turbo wheels in 18×8 and a 35mm offset. Mark had picked these up last year but decided to rattle-can them black for this winter season - a far improvement from the previous look that goes well with Mark’s smoked theme.

The Hartmann New Turbo wheels are on sale at $199.75 each!  Click on the thumbnail below to direct you to our online store to purchase these wheels.

Let’s talk about VS-XX… (again)

7 11 2008

Despite the rain and early arrival of darkness these days, we were still able to get Mario’s Work VS-XX wheels on for him. The anticipation of seeing the final outcome was overwhelming so we even decided to go out for an informal ’shoot’ on our way home…

At 19×8.5″ all around, these Work VS-XX wheels fill the fenders of this Mk5 GLI perfectly and Mario didn’t have to do a single thing to change his original stance since careful measuring had ensured proper fitment. A final offset of 45mm was selected to maximize the lip on a high-offset requiring Mk5 yet push the face of the wheels out as close to the fender as possible without any tire-to-fender contact issues.

Mario took some of his own pictures during the shoot, most of which can be found in his testimonial (and fantastic write-up!!) but I like his photography style and wanted to share his pictures here with you as well.

Mario, congratulations on the purchase of your dream wheel! We thank you for the opportunity and we look forward to doing more business with you in the future. Your Mk5 Jetta GLI is by far one of the hottest in the Pacific Northwest!!
