… And then, (yes, and then!) APR has debuted their B8 3.0 TFSI Supercharger Coolant Performance System!
APR is pleased to present a completely re-engineered supercharger Coolant Performance System (CPS) for the Audi B8 3.0 TFSI. Through extensive motorsport testing in GRAND-AM Road Racing, APR’s Engineering Team discovered the OEM supercharger cooling system was inadequate at higher boost pressures and power levels and therefore developed the APR CPS to improve both performance and reliability.
Performance
As with any forced induction system, the charged air heats up as it is compressed. To gain the most efficiency, the air must be cooled again prior to entering the combustion chamber. Most all automotive enthusiasts have experienced this with even normally aspirated cars whereas in the cool winter days our cars clearly perform better than in the hot summer months. When increasing engine power or during spirited driving, and especially during brutal motorsport racing, the OEM supercharger cooling system quickly becomes taxed, creating a loss of engine performance.
Reliability
Heat is a major concern regarding the health of your engine and APR pays close attention to reliability. The engine’s ECU takes many steps to reduce power output when temperatures rise, however it can only go so far. By re-engineering the supercharger cooling system, APR is able to not only keep performance consistent but also ensure your engine is more reliable by having done so.
Following APR’s mantra of “Performance Without Compromise” APR’s Engineering Team left no stone unturned in the quest to deliver a completely re-engineered performance cooling system. The APR CPS consists of three major components:
Coolant Separation Reservoir

Coolant Pump

Coolant Radiator

APR CPS – Coolant Separation Reservoir
Audi chose to directly tie the supercharger cooling circuit into the engine cooling circuit to achieve a greater volume of coolant and ease of service. Unfortunately, engine coolant temperatures can easily soar beyond 100c which results in less ability to aid in cooling the dual air-to-water intercoolers located in the supercharger manifold.

By separating the engine and the supercharger cooling circuits, coolant temperature drops significantly which yields a 6% cooler intake air temperature (IAT) during back-to-back pulls. This, however is only the first step in solving the cooling inefficiency as increasing the volume of coolant is necessary to ensure repeatable performance.
The main centerpiece to the Coolant Separation Reservoir is a CNC machined overfill reservoir. The reservoir is e-coated black and proudly displays the APR Logo. This small addition to the engine bay is both visually appealing and functional.

Logo Detail
APR CPS – Coolant High Flow Pump

The ability for the dual air-to-water intercoolers to reduce intake air temperature depends heavily upon the system’s ability to pump fresh coolant through the intercoolers and out to a front mounted radiator. APR’s engineers selected a pump capable of flowing significantly more than the OEM coolant pump. The result was a 48% flow increase which when combined with the Coolant Separation Reservoir dropped IAT’s 11% over stock.
The upgraded pump is an unobtrusive and out of sight addition, as APR’s engineers have created higher than OEM quality brackets and wiring harnesses to seamlessly connect the pump to the factory wiring system and chassis without any interference with existing components.
APR CPS – Front Mount Coolant Radiator

Properly functioning air-to-water intercoolers rely heavily on the temperature of coolant flowing through the system. Increasing the volume of coolant and increasing the surface area of front mounted radiators significantly reduces coolant temperature. With an increased volume of coolant, coolant takes longer to warm and with an increased surface area, coolant temperature is reduced at a more rapid rate.
The APR Front Mounted Radiator towers over the 5.5 inch tall OEM radiator and stands 17 inches tall in comparison. This massive increase in size results in a much larger coolant capacity and a 138% increase in frontal surface area. When combined with the APR Coolant Separation Reservoir and APR Coolant Pump, IAT’s dropped significantly, resulting in a 23% decrease during brutal testing. The result is power that remains consistent pull after pull even with almost no time to cool down between runs.

Testing Data
Grueling, six run, back-to-back dyno pulls were conducted with the APR CPS and OEM coolant systems to measure intake air temperature in the most demanding environments. During testing, starting intake air temperature was brought to 37.5c (99.5F) before conducting each dyno pull. Each dyno pull was also a full 21 second sweep with only 5 seconds of cool down time between runs.
The differences were immediate and exactly as expected. After only the very first pull, the stock system’s intake air temperature at redline jumped 47% and by the sixth pull, was 56% hotter than the starting temperature. After only the third pull, intake air temperature was above 80c (176F), resulting in the boost pressure bypass valve opening on demand of the ECU, reducing boost pressure in an effort to protect the engine.
The APR CPS controlled intake air temperature during every dyno pull with a small increase in temperature by the sixth consecutive run. After the first dyno pull, intake air temperature was 15.5c (60F) less than stock. By the sixth run, intake air temperature only increased 10c (50F) more than the first run and was 20c (68F) less than stock after the sixth run.
Power was impacted greatly by rising IAT’s. The APR CPS showed roughly a 10 AWHP deviation from the first run to the sixth run while the stock system lost over 50 AWHP by the final pull. The APR CPS increases engine reliability and increases repeatability by controlling intake air temperature. It’s Performance Without Compromise only APR can deliver!

APR Presents: 3.0 TFSI Supercharger Pulley Upgrade
Written by Dion on June 20, 2011 – 8:29 am -
APR is pleased to present the world’s first Supercharger Pulley and corresponding ECU Upgrade for the 3.0 TFSI. Without recalibrating the ECU found in Audi’s latest line of supercharged direct injected vehicles, pulley upgrades offer no advantage, as the supercharger will simply bypass boost pressure. With APR’s ability to expertly recalibrate the 3.0 TFSI Engine Control Unit, we are able to develop new hardware and calibrate the ECU to work properly as if intended by the factory.
Many enthusiasts coming from Audi’s history of turbocharged vehicles expected massive increases in torque, at lower RPMs, simply by adding an ECU Upgrade. Unlike turbochargers, roots style superchargers are positive displacement meaning they provide a fixed amount of air flow based on engine speed. On the 3.0TFSI Audi chose to use a bypass valve that bleeds off boost pressure when requested. Keeping the valve almost completely shut at lower RPMs allows them to make respectable torque, and, opening the valve at higher RPMs allows them to keep horsepower within their marketing goal. Consequently, the APR Stage I ECU upgrade provides a relatively low increase in torque but an exceptional increase in power. For those demanding more torque, the APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade is the answer. Spinning the supercharger faster increases air flow and effectively doubles the low-end gains of Stage I. The gain in torque is felt immediately, but the results are present from beginning to end adding up to 80ft-lbs and 108 horsepower at all four wheels!

APR has chosen not to cut any corners and as such each APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade Kit includes a new supercharger belt. Furthermore, all existing APR Stage I ECU Upgrade customers are entitled to a free APR Stage II+ ECU Upgrade required for proper functionality. Finally, every APR Pulley is E-Coated black for an OEM appearance.
Increased Supercharger Speed

The 3.0 TFSI uses an Eaton Twin Vortices Series (TVS) Roots-type Supercharger unit, which features a four-lobe rotor design to safely run at high operating speeds. APR’s no stranger to the Eaton TVS1320 Supercharger Unit having spent several years developing a Stage III supercharger System for the High Revving Audi RS4 and S5 4.2L FSI V8. Through the years, APR’s Engineering Teams placed even greater speed demands on the TVS1320 than offered to the public with a flawless track record.
A balance of power and reliability is always a concern when going beyond what Audi delivers from the factory and APR’s Engineering Teams use accelerated life testing both in house and through professional motorsport racing to ensure years of Performance Without Compromise.
Increased Boost Pressure

Unlike turbochargers, superchargers boost pressure is nearly fixed in relation to engine speed. The factory supercharger unit features an electronically controlled bypass valve which bleeds off boost pressure when mass airflow and load levels increase past the power requirements set from the factory. The APR ECU upgrade prevents boost from bleeding back into the intake system, resulting in higher boost levels. However, boost pressure is still limited by the size and the speed of the supercharger.
The APR Supercharger Pulley Upgrade increases the RPM of the supercharger resulting in an increase of boost pressure all the way to redline. This results in torque you can feel off idle all the way to redline.

Installation Kit

The factory pulley is pressed on to the supercharger’s input shaft. It’s not possible to remove the factory pulley without damage, or damaging the supercharger itself unless special care and attention is taken.
The APR Supercharger Pulley Installation Kit is designed to encapsulate the entire pulley and pull
evenly across its entire surface. The unit is compact enough to not require complete removal of the front end of your vehicle, reducing labor time. Furthermore a provision was made to incorporate a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar which allows the entire assembly to be easily counter-held and ultimately makes the process a one man job.
A complete install manual covers the install process from start to finish, making installation easily completed in your own garage should you take on the task. Otherwise we are happy to offer installation services – just give us a call to schedule an appointment!
Software
APR Stage 2+ Software is REQUIRED to take advantage of this modification. Pulley upgrades do not work on stock or stage 1 software.
APR Stage 2+ Software Upgrade is included as a Free upgrade for existing APR Stage 1 Customers.
If you do not have APR Software already, you’ll need to purchase it when sending in your ECU for this upgrade.
Stage 2+ Requirements
- APR Software
- APR Pulley
Nothing else is required! You may run your stock exhaust and stock intake, however maximum
gains will be achieved with an APR RSC Exhaust System and APR Carbonio Stage 2 Intake System.

APR Presents: S5 & A5 4.2L FSI V8, 3.2L FSI V6 and 3.0 TDI Intake System!
Written by Dion on June 2, 2011 – 9:14 am -
We are proud to announce the arrival of a performance intake from our performance partners at APR – Carbonio’s latest carbon fiber intake for the 4.2L FSI V8, 3.2L FSI V6 and 3.0 TDI!! This intake features a ram air design that completely separates the intake filter from the engine bay. Building from years of experience on and off the race track, Carbonio’s and APR’s engineering teams have spent countless hours developing a true cold air and ram air carbon fiber design that can be recreated affordably for the street performance enthusiast.

Non Collapsible Design:
During APR’s S5 4.2L FSI V8 Stage III Supercharger development, APR’s Engineering Teams quickly realized the factory intake system was not suitable for the significantly increased demands set by the APR Supercharger unit. The factory rubber intake plenum would collapse under boost and rob the engine of precious airflow. In some cases, the factory rubber intake plenum would completely detach and seal off the intake system! Thankfully APR’s Carbonio intake system does not suffer this design characteristic making this intake system suitable for even the most demanding horsepower requirements!
Smooth and Direct Air Flow:
The OEM intake system vents some of the incoming air into the engine bay and takes several twists and turns before the air ever reaches the engine. The Carbonio intake system simplifies the intake system by directing all incoming air directly at the filter. This allows for faster throttle response and increased torque at all RPM’s.
Benefits of the Carbonio CAI System include:
* Increased Horsepower and Torque
* Improved Throttle Response
* Improved Fuel Economy
* Enhanced Engine Volumetric Efficiency
* Enhanced Sound of the Engine
* Installs in an Hour (does not require bumper or headlight removal)
* Removes OEM intake snorkel which can collapse under boost (On Forced Induction Setups)
* Maintains Clean Appearance by Retaining Factory Engine Covers
* Maintains All Factory Emissions Components
* Fits Both Manual and Automatic Transmissions
* Fully Compatible and Complimentary, with APR Software, Exhaust Systems and Supercharger Systems
* Maintains the Thermostatically Controlled OEM Flap Valve Assembly from the Factory Air box
Price: $449

APR Presents: APR 2.0T FSI S3/Golf-R K04 Turbocharger System!
Written by Dion on May 26, 2011 – 11:11 am -
APR’s Engineering Teams have revisited and revised the current 2.0T FSI S3/ED30 K04 Conversion Package to deliver a state of the art system similar to their current 2.0 TSI K04 Turbocharger offering. This results in a more compact and simple solution reducing install times and significantly reducing the price of the turbocharger system!
Direct Compressor Cover DV Recirculation

APR was able to significantly reduce the cost of the current turbocharger system by offering some additions not found anywhere else in the industry. Firstly the APR FSI K04 Turbocharger unit’s compressor cover is CNC Machined to relocate the OEM DV onto the turbocharger unit itself to eliminate the need for extra components. This solves several issues:
- You can use any throttle body pipe you would like. No need to run a GTI Y throttle body pipe.
- You do not need to purchase OEM or aftermarket recirculation hoses.
- You do not need to use the OEM recirculating turbo inlet hose.
- You do not need an intake with a recirculation bung.
- You do not need to extend the OEM DV harness.
Turbo Muffler Delete

Secondly, APR tackled the OEM turbo sound suppressor muffler and turbo outlet pipe. On the OEM K04 turbocharger, a turbo muffler is introduced to reduce some sound from the turbocharger unit. This muffler unit reduces the smooth turbo outlet airflow and is often blocked off by purchasing extra hardware. By removing this part and manufacturing our own turbo outlet flange and hose we solved the following issues:
- Turbo muffler removed enhancing turbocharger sound.
- Turbo muffler removed smoothing turbo outlet airflow.
- APR Multi-Ply silicon hose included which removes the need to purchase an
aftermarket or S3 turbo discharger pipe.
The New 2.0T FSI K04 Turbocharger system is now sold in several configurations:
APR went a step further and designed several packages aimed towards all customers no matter what their situation may be!
T2100011 – $2,149 – K04 Turbocharger System
For the first time ever APR is offering the FSI K04 turbocharger system as a bare bones kit. All hardware, gaskets, and hoses are included with the exception of the S3 injectors, S3 injector install kit and APR HPFP. Also, APR Software is not included in this package. APR Software requires S3 Injectors and an APR HPFP however this system is available for customers who would like to take matters into their own hands.
Please note K04′s are not designed to work with stock, stage 1, 2 or 2+ oem K03 software. K04 Software is required for correct operation.
T2100012 – $2,649 – K04 Turbocharger System w/ APR Software
This bare bones system is the same as above however it includes APR software at a discounted
price. APR requires S3 injectors and APR HPFP when running this turbocharger system.
T2100013 – $3,299 – K04 Turbocharger System w/ APR Software and Injectors
This system includes everything you need to bolt on and go with the exception of the APR
HPFP which may be purchased separately.
T2100014 – $3,579 – K04 Turbocharger System w/ APR Software and APR HPFP
